Resources : Ancient Art : Worldwide
Around the world and on every continent, art was part of the lives and cultures of early civilizations. From the earliest illustrations on cave walls to elaborate carvings, humanity has incorporated art into virtually every facet of life and culture.
Described as "a chronological, geographical, and thematic exploration of the history of art from around the world", and presented by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this online exhibit presents works of art from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection, timelines and maps, thematic essays that focus on artistic movements and periods, archaelogical sites, empires and civilations and more. Index and search functions allow for easy navigation by essay, work of art, subject and artist.
Part of a broader section on art history at About.com. The author describes this art resource as containing articles on art history, resources, and links to information related to art. The art of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome and other "Western" civilizations; as well as that of China, Japan, India and North America are covered. This portion of the Art History section covers a period spanning from the Old Stone Age (30,000 BC) to the Fall of the Roman Empire (approximately 400 AD.)
Interactive maps and timelines place approximately 2,000 artefacts from British museums into "their geographical and chronological context." An excellent resource for immediate comparative studies relating the art from one country to that of another at the same time, the timeline includes ancient art from Africa, the Americas, Asia, the British Isles, Europe and Oceania.
